Falling windows and spoilers
The following review was inspired by this week’s recall for 163 McLaren 765LT Coupes, where a badly bonded rear window can fall off while driving. We don’t think McLaren has too many people in the garage, so we searched our archives and found other recalls for much more affordable cars that also had issues with windows, panoramic roofs, or spoilers falling off. The range of cars affected is really varied — judge for yourself…
- Ford Bronco: Incorrectly glued side window
- Ford Focus with faulty seat belts, side window may fall out with Skoda Octavia
- Window could drop onto the road with Citroën C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo
- The windows may become detached with the VW Crafter
- Renault Twingo’s bonnet may detach; Dodge and Chrysler’s windscreen can fall out
- Porsche, Ford and Hyundai struggle with windows; BMW and Dacia with airbags
- The electric Ford Mustang Mach-E may lose its glass roof
- Various Mercedes-Benz models: The panoramic roof window panel may detach
- VW Polo may lose sunroof; Opel Mokka without windscreen wipers
- Do you have a panoramic sun-roof? You may have a problem…
In some cases, the reason for the recall is the risk of being pinched by a window or a roof…
- Hyundai Tucson: Rear electric windows malfunction
- Alfa Romeo Tonale: The sunroof can cause injury
- Ford Transit Custom: The anti-pinch protection may fail
…or other bodywork parts falling off…
- Body parts may detach from Volkswagen, Ford, Land Rover, Mercedes and Lamborghini
- Audi, BMW and VW announced recalls due to falling strips and spoilers
- Land Rover may lose spoiler, parked Hyundai may roll away
- Rear spoiler can detach from Dodge Durango, but also from BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen
- Audi recalls over the faulty dashboard, Mercedes over falling spoiler
- Tesla can drop the trim strip while driving, Volkswagen may lose the entire spoiler
- Renault Espace may lose its roof spoiler while driving
- BMW X3 could lose its rear spoiler, defective brake booster with Toyota and Lexus
- With the BMW X1, the rear lights can fall onto the road while the Mercedes rear spoiler can do the same
…and also sometimes the risk of fire…
If you are interested in other recalls relating to the exterior parts of vehicles, you will find them under the bodywork tag.
