According to What Car? Reliability Survey, the current-generation BMW 5 Series petrol dominates the luxury class with a rating of 96.9 per cent. Occasionally, there are faults with the non-engine electrics, brakes, and the engine itself, but these are not constantly recurring faults given the high rating. Half of the cars rated spent less than a day in the workshop.
In the second place, we find the Volvo S90/V90 with mostly minor problems on the bodywork, non-engine electrics or navigation, which did not affect its driveability. In third place is the current Mercedes-Benz E-Class with faults on the battery, non-engine electrics and navigation, with a rating of 90.7%.
The least reliable luxury cars
The BMW 5 Series can also be found at the other end of the seven-strong list. Its diesel version faces the same problems as the petrol model, alongside issues such as the exhaust or engine and its electrical parts.
We also find the Audi A6 twice in the review. Once as the current model in penultimate place, and the previous generation, produced until 2018, as the last with a rating of 82.1 per cent. As many as forty per cent of the cars reported by readers broke down, most often due to the battery, but also the body, brakes or non-engine electrics. The engine and its electrics, navigation, chassis, or bodywork are often problems even for the current generation of cars.
