The warning about the increased risk of fire with the BMW 3-Series has been known since the end of 2017. A recall has already taken place in some markets, but only at the end of January did it start in Germany. About 430,000 owners of the BMW E90 to E93 model series must visit authorized services.
The recall concerns vehicles manufactured between July 2004 and June 2012. The plug connection from the wiring harness to the heating and air conditioning system’s fan regulator could overheat due to fretting corrosion. Possible consequences are a short circuit, melting of the connector or “in very rare cases” a “thermal issue” – even when the vehicle is parked.
BMW has issued three different codes for the current recall – 0061830500, 0061660400, or 0061830400 depending on the remedy. The type of repair of the connector depends on the test result. “If necessary, the fan regulator will also be replaced,” announced the BMW spokeswoman. The repair in an authorized workshop should take a maximum of 60 minutes.
The BMW spokeswoman also admitted that there had already been actions “due to various field situations and different regulatory requirements” in other markets. This actions also applies to the 1-Series (E8x), X5 and X6 (E7x). According to her, the current recall codes apply exclusively to the 3 Series (E9x). Outside Germany, another 115,000 vehicles are currently affected.
