Except for the fourth-place Volvo XC90, it was a battle between Germany and the UK among luxury SUVs, with the former winning the battle outright. The most reliable model in this category is the Porsche Macan, with a score of 97.9 per cent, with bodywork, marginal interior design and non-motorised electrics being the problems.

Second place goes to the current Audi Q7 with a score of 96.6 per cent, with engine problems being the most common, followed by navigation and interior design. The third-place BMW X5 of the last generation looks a bit distant at the leaders with 91.3 per cent. According to British owners and What Car? readers, the car is plagued by electrical parts outside the bonnet and steering.

The least reliable luxury SUVs

Britain is at the other end of the ranking. Third from the bottom is the Range Rover Sport, second from the bottom is the classic Range Rover, and the worst performer is the Land Rover Discovery. In all three cases, these are current-generation cars and technically related. The Discovery scored 72.1%, with bodywork problems the most common, followed by non-engine related electrical parts and the battery. Several faults caused the car to be unroadworthy, and many cars had to be in the workshop for more than a week. Hence the worst rating.

The classic Range Rover broke down in 38 per cent of cases, with the engine, bodywork and interior design proving problematic. The smaller Range Rover Sport was more than twice as likely to break down as the diesel-powered one, with electrical parts, engine and navigation being the most common problems. Up to 40 per cent of cars also stayed in the workshop for more than a week.
