According to What Car? Reliability Survey, the reliability leader in the executive class is the petrol Skoda Superb with a near-perfect rating of 99.2 per cent. The petrol rather than diesel versions have fewer faults, with the most significant problems occurring in the bodywork and interior design. However, the Brits praise the fact that even though the car was no longer under warranty, Skoda covered the repairs financially and fixed the cars in a day or less. The diesel Superb is found in tenth place with a rating of 93.4%.

The Kia Optima came in second with a rating of 98.4 per cent, with the exhaust and gearbox or clutch potentially problematic. But all defects were covered by a generous seven-year warranty. The third is the current-generation BMW 3 Series with a petrol engine, which has the most common problem with electrical parts outside the engine compartment. Owners have also complained about the bodywork, exhaust and chassis.

The least reliable executive cars

At the end of the ranking are the Jaguar XE diesel, Alfa Romeo Giulia and the ending generation of the Mercedes C-Class, again with a diesel engine. The Mercedes scored a rating of 80.9 per cent; the owners reported most problems with the battery or engine and its electrical components. Diesel C-Classes have more faults than petrol ones, and in some cases, the repair has cost the owner a lot of money. Even repairs to the Giulia are not cheap in some cases, with problems most often occurring on the engine, brakes and non-engine electrics. With the Jaguar, the most significant problems are with the diesel engines.

Note: Executive car is a British term for a large car which is equivalent to the European E-segment and American full-size classifications.
