Risk of engine damage and fire with Ford; airbags reported by Hyundai (week 13/24)

Overview of the recalls in the 13th week of 2024

Ten recalls for 19 models of eight manufacturers were issued via EU Safety Gate in week 12 of 2024. Three recalls for five models were announced by the German Motor Vehicle Authority (KBA).

Ford and Renault have two recalls each this week, while Hyundai, Lexus, Mazda, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota and Volkswagen have one each in the European Safety Gate system.

Jeep and Ford are issuing recalls via the KBA.

Oil leak and fire risk at Ford

We have had a Ford recall with internal code 23S27 in the KBA database since last summer. It says the recall involves 336,754 Galaxy, Kuga, S-Max HEV and PHEVs built between 2019 and 2023. The oil pan or engine block rupture would happen due to the electric motor not disconnecting from the internal combustion engine. However, Safety Gate cites insufficient cooling air flow and blockage of the oil channel as the cause. The consequence should be the same – fatal engine damage. In any case, if you have one of the cars listed and have not received an invitation letter, your best bet is to contact an authorized Ford dealership, which will use the VIN code to tell you if the problem is related to your car or not. Hyundai Tucson: Curtain airbags

Hyundai is recalling over 14,000 Tucsons for improperly installed curtain airbags. The automaker should send a letter to owners of affected cars manufactured between April 2021 and August 2023.

Volkswagen seeks test and show cars

Volkswagen’s two new recalls, although only involving 12 cars, appear to be a continuation of earlier recalls for thousands of cars that the automaker tried to buy back from owners. Read more here.

Japanese troubles

So far, an unspecified number of 2019 to 2023 Toyotas and Lexuses could have an immobiliser problem that could bring the car to a sudden stop – see table below. For the Mazda recall, we know the number of affected cars. With more than 145,000 CX-60 and CX-90 SUVs, a sudden increase of effort may be felt when steering the vehicle.
