KBA-RECALLS

The recalls announced by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA)

We have been tracking recalls regularly since 2017, and each year, we compile a ranking of the most recalled makes and models as reported by the European Safety Gate (formerly Rapex) alert system. In 2023, we added the recalls announced by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) to our overview for the first time.

Last year, we also set up a special KBA Recalls section for these recalls translated into English, where you can search by manufacturer for now.

Mainly for owners of older cars

Owners of newer cars purchased from an official dealer are usually well informed about the recalls, and their vehicles are also usually subject to so-called service campaigns (TSBs), which you won’t find in any list of recalls. On the contrary, owners of older, second-hand, or individually imported cars should be particularly interested in some free repairs during recall campaigns. The second and subsequent owner of the car may only usually get the information about the recall once he asks the dealership himself.

Whoever imported a car from the U.S. should also check out the recalls announced by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on our other new website, car-recalls.com.

Older KBA recalls

The KBA recalls database often includes actions that do not appear in the European Safety Gate rapid alert system. To check your car’s specific make and model, you can go directly to the KBA database, where the information is in German, but you can use the English translator directly in your browser.

What should an owner do if there's a recall?

Please note that the recall may not apply to all vehicles produced in a given period. If you think your car might be affected, you should immediately contact an dealer or workshop officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details. You can use our sample request text. After reporting the vehicle's VIN code, you will find out if the defect is present on your car, or if it has already been resolved by the previous owner if the car was purchased second-hand.

If you wish to know more about the eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accident damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), in that case, we suggest going to this page.

Do you know the year Your car was made? You most likely don't.
