Accident risk with the Toyota Yaris and C-HR. 456,000 cars are being recalled

Due to an inactive radar sensor, the emergency braking function for collision avoidance might not work with the Toyota C-HR and Toyota Yaris.

It is possible that the radar required for certain driver assistance functions was not activated during the production process. An activated radar sensor is necessary for a functioning emergency braking system to avoid rear-end collisions (Pre-Collision System – PCS). Therefore, the PCS would not be able to detect an obstacle if it was inactive and would thus not provide the intended warnings or support the brakes in the event of danger. In addition, the driver would not receive a warning that the PCS is not functioning.

Worldwide, 456,000 cars manufactured between 20 March 2020 and 2 August 2021 will be recalled, 319,000 of which are registered in Europe.

According to a spokesperson for Toyota Deutschland GmbH on kfz-rueckrufe.de, the radar sensor will be “checked and, if necessary, adjusted”, which will take a maximum of just over half an hour. The internal code for the recall is “22SMD-016“. Toyota has not yet reported any accidents caused by this defect. The manufacturer also assumes that the problem affects only some of the recalled vehicles.
