Recall for nearly 3.4 million cars. Hyundai and Kia must park outside

South Korean carmakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 3.4 million vehicles in the United States because of the fire risk.

The companies urged owners of the recalled cars to park those cars outside until the recall repair is complete.

According to the carmakers, brake fluid can leak in recalled cars, leading to an electrical short and subsequent engine fire, both in a moving and parked car. Companies have received reports of more than 30 fires related to this issue since 2017.

Hyundai recalls 1.64 million Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, Accent, Azera, Veloster, Santa Fe, Equus, Veracruz, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell and Santa Fe Sport.

At Kia, the recall affects 1.73 million Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Sportage, K900, Optima, Soul, Rio, Sorento and Rondo.

Details of the US recalls can be found on our website car-recalls.com.

Hyundai and Kia Recalls in Europe

Recently, both carmakers have had several recalls in Europe as well. Nearly 40,000 Kia Sorento SUVs built between April and August 2022 may experience turn signal failure due to a software error. Front seat belt pretensioners can explode, and metal parts can cause occupant injuries with 92,162 Genesis G80, GV60, GV70 and GV80 vehicles manufactured between March 23, 2019 and February 21, 2023. We spotted another Hyundai recall this week in the German KBA database. It affects 19,141 Hyundai Kona and Hyundai i40 vehicles from 2018 to 2020 that may experience brake booster failure and engine damage. We write about it in our weekly overview Kia and Hyundai recall over 150,000 cars (week 38/23)

What should an owner do if there's a recall?

Please note that the recall may not apply to all vehicles produced in a given period. If you think your car might be affected, you should immediately contact an dealer or workshop officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details. You can use our sample request text. After reporting the vehicle's VIN code, you will find out if the defect is present on your car, or if it has already been resolved by the previous owner if the car was purchased second-hand.

If you wish to know more about the eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accident damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), in that case, we suggest going to this page.

Do you know the year Your car was made? You most likely don't.
