BMW’s massive recall: 6.5 million cars affected

BMW is recalling 6,503,996 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Series and X1, X3, X5, and X6 SUVs manufactured between 2003 and 2018 to authorised workshops worldwide. The reason for the recall is that a fault in the gas generator of the driver’s airbag leads to uncontrolled deployment when the airbag is deployed and to the release of metal fragments that can injure the occupants.

Editor’s note: In the course of the vehicle’s life, the affected vehicles may have been changed to a Sport or M-Sport steering wheel equipped with a Takata airbag module. These airbags contain the PSDI-5 inflator, which could malfunction in certain situations.

Two incidents with personal injury/death known.

In an authorised workshop, the driver’s airbag is checked and replaced if necessary.

The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) monitors the recall under the reference number “14056R“. The internal manufacturer codes are “0032550300, 0032560300, 0032570300, 0032580300“.
