Halftime 2024: Mercedes, BMW and Hyundai have the most recalls so far

At the end of each year, we publish a detailed overview of the recalls announced through the European Safety Gate alert system. In the first six months of 2024, we have already recorded 113 recalls and can see which carmakers have announced the most recalls so far.

It should be noted that the figures come directly from the Safety Gate database without further filtering, such as the number of vehicles involved, which is not reported by the European information system. However, we check the extent of each recall from other sources, and if we find that it affects only a limited number of vehicles (in the order of units or tens of units), we do not include it in our database. Therefore, there may be differences between the official Safety Gate numbers and the number of recalls recorded on our website.

The statistics also show that the most common risks in the first half of 2024 were injury (86), fire (32) and environmental impact (4). Germany (77) reported the highest number of recalls to the EU warning system, followed by France (17) and Portugal (11).

The following table shows the 23 manufacturers with two or more recalls in the first half of 2024. Click on a brand name to see a list of all the recalls we have on record for that make, not just this year’s. You can also search by model. You will also find links for each manufacturer to last year’s (2023) recalls. From the beginning of 2023, we have also been tracking the recalls announced via the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt – KBA), which you can see by clicking on the last link in the table.

What should an owner do if there's a recall?

Please note that the recall may not apply to all vehicles produced in a given period. If you think your car might be affected, you should immediately contact an dealer or workshop officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details. You can use our sample request text. After reporting the vehicle's VIN code, you will find out if the defect is present on your car, or if it has already been resolved by the previous owner if the car was purchased second-hand.

If you wish to know more about the eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accident damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), in that case, we suggest going to this page.

Do you know the year Your car was made? You most likely don't.
