Toyota RAV4: Possible shutdown of the hybrid system

Toyota is recalling approximately 21,000 RAV4s manufactured in the production period from Nov. 25, 2019, to Jun. 24, 2021, worldwide. The reason for the recall is that the hybrid system can shut down abruptly, posing an increased risk of an accident. The voltage of the hybrid battery drops below a certain threshold, and the vehicle thus loses traction. This happens when the accelerator pedal is pressed too quickly after the vehicle has been driven continuously in purely electric mode at low temperatures. In Germany, 1,570 vehicles are affected.

In the workshop, the software of the “Hybrid Vehicle Control” (HEV-ECU) is updated, as it has the logic to calculate the power limit of the hybrid battery, but not under the mentioned circumstances, which is actually necessary to protect the hybrid battery. The repair will take about 45 minutes. The internal code is “23SD-003”.
