Well, I have owned my diesel XE 180 XE R Sport for almost 10 years now with nothing particularly going wrong. The stop/start was a bit of a nusance in the first two years failing to operate when stopping. There was an update to the electronics that sorted that. I found that keeping the battery fully charged it kept the function working, so assume that the update was to allow a slightly lower charge to keep in operating. The biggest faults seem to be the timing chain snapping and causing catastrophic damage to the engine. This seemed to only affect diesel Ingenium engines. Modifications to the chain and pulleys seems to have cleared that issue. I DO NOT believe that engine oil can last 20000 miles without becoming totally not up to the job, so give my car two oil and filter changes a year and do not work to that high mileage recommendation of 2 yearly servicing. I wonder how many suffered from engine failure due to the lack of quality oil breaking down after 10000 miles. Another early fault was the A/C condenser failing after 2 years or so. There was a lot of rubbish from dealers as to the fact it was caused by stone damage when it was actually poor manufacturing causing corrosion internally at the bottom pipework. That was my thoughts initially and after 8 years mine failed and on inspection proved my theory. Overall after a low almost 40000 miles it has be a very good car. Some little quirks are usually sorted by a battery charge up for low mileage users. Quite a few people compained about tyre wall cracking which is common on all makes of tyre after anything from 2 years+ Dunlop and Pirelli were standard fitment but some cars were fitted with Continentals. Folding rear seats were an option but should have been standard in all models. Rear leg room is cramped but OK for a family with young children. Economy is great with a regular 65 mile run achieving a good 65mpg at speeds varying from 50-70 mph due to road restrictions. A great car that needs oil changes at a max of 10000 miles to keep things running as it left the factory and very maligned by a poor service regime.

    PROS

    • Styling, comfortable, surefooted, economical and overall a very good driver's car

    CONS

    • Timing chain on poorly maintained cars, air con condenser, expensive parts if required, poor rear legroom.. The reason for 4* for recommendation is due to servicing intervals and if servicing has been done earlier than the makers suggest
