Loosening the steering gear bolts with various Mercedes-Benz models

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 279,443 vehicles of various models manufactured in the production period from 14 April 2010 to 12 April 2017 to workshops worldwide. The reason for the measure is an aluminium bolt of the steering gear, which can corrode when exposed to spray water in combination with special regional conditions, such as particularly aggressive de-icing media (road salt).

In the event of successful corrosion, the strength of the bolt could be compromised. Breaking of the bolt cannot be ruled out due to increased forces during shunting and parking operations. If all three screws break over time, the power pack could become detached from the steering gear, which could lead to a failure of the steering power assistance. In Germany, 185,692 vehicles are affected.

In the workshop, the affected screws are replaced with steel screws. The workshop visit can take up to 2.5 hours. The internal code is “4694204”.
