Hyundai recalls over a million of older cars due to fire risk in the ESP unit

First published 10. 11. 2024, last update 31. 3. 2025 – see below.
Hyundai has recalled in the first phase to authorized workshops around the world 76,065 vehicles of the Grand Santa Fe, iX35, and Veloster model series manufactured between 2011 and 2014. The reason for the recall is a short circuit in the ESP unit that can lead to fire

In an authorised workshop, a revised fuse is installed.

The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) monitors the recall under the reference number “14245R“. The internal manufacturer code is “41D091 (Part 1)”.

Note: According to other sources, a total of 222,637 vehicles are affected after the second phase of the recall. In addition to the above models, the Hyundai i40 is also added.

Another source describes the risk in more detail: Impurities in the brake fluid can lead to physical changes in the O-rings. Due to the damaged O-rings, brake fluid can penetrate into current-carrying areas (in this case the ABS control board). As brake fluid is electrically conductive, the ingress of moisture can lead to short circuits. Electrical short circuits can set flammable materials on fire. The danger comes from a resulting vehicle fire.

Update 20. 1. 2025
In January 2025, the next phase of this recall for 251,422 vehicles of the Equus, H1, iX55 and Santa Fe model series produced between 2007 and 2014 was listed in the KBA database. Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) shows it under the reference number “14714R“. The manufacturer’s internal code is ‘41D091 (Teil 4)’.

Update 24. 2. 2025
The third phase of the recall action has the reference number “14604R” in the database of the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). The manufacturer’s internal code is „41D091 (Teil 3)“. A further 784,027 Accent, Azera, Genesis, Grandeur, IX35 and Tucson models built between 2009 and 2014 are being recalled.

Update 31. 3. 2025
In March 2025, all the models mentioned above are joined by another Hyundai iX35. A further 362,438 cars built between 2010 and 2013 may be affected. In the database of the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), the action has the reference number “14830R“. The manufacturer’s internal code this time is “41DC27“.
