General Motors (GM) has launched a major recall for 597,630 vehicles equipped with the 6.2-litre L87 eight-cylinder engine. The recall covers model years 2021 through 2024 and includes popular SUVs and pickups from Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac.
The reason for the recall is a potential manufacturing defect in the connecting rods and crankshafts that could lead to serious engine damage or complete failure. According to reports from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this can occur without warning, increasing the risk of an accident. NHTSA received 39 complaints of engine failure and launched an investigation in January.
Affected models
The following models are affected by the recall:
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2019–2024)
- Chevrolet Tahoe (2021–2024)
- Chevrolet Suburban (2021–2024)
- GMC Sierra 1500 (2019–2024)
- GMC Yukon a Yukon XL (2021–2024)
- Cadillac Escalade a Escalade ESV (2021–2024)
If you have an individually imported car in Europe, our website car-recalls.com can help you find other recalls you may not be aware of. Click on the model name above to see it. Owners of affected cars in the USA will be contacted and asked to visit an authorized workshop to have their engine checked. If the engine passes inspection, the oil will be changed to a higher viscosity oil (0W-40), including replacement of the oil filter and cap. If a fault is found, the engine will be repaired or replaced.
The recall has a significant impact on GM because it affects some of the company’s best-selling and most profitable models. Problems with the availability of spare parts and engines have led to longer waiting times for repairs. Some dealers are reportedly holding back new engines for their loyal customers, further complicating the situation.
