Faulty Welds on the Chassis are Reported by Volkswagen, Ford and Jeep (week 40/18)

19 models of eight car manufacturers were recalled at the 40th week of 2018. Two recalls were announced by Mitsubishi, Jeep, and Mercedes-Benz. Volkswagen, Cadillac, Ford, Land Rover and Opel issued one recall each. There were no recalls for motorcycles this week.

While Porsche published through the Rapex system two recalls due to the chassis problems last week – we wrote here – this week, three manufacturers are reported faulty welds on some parts of the chassis again. For the Jeep Compass made in January 2018, the front transverse control arm may break, as with the Ford Ecosport produced in this year´s May and June. The Jeep Compass also suffers from another problem with the daylight switch. A separate chapter is the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, for which the lower securing eye of the rear gas-filled shock absorbers could be incorrectly welded in a period of two months, from January 15, 2018 to March 14, 2018. Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi announced this week two recalls for Outlander models and its hybrid version PHEV. For vehicles produced from 2014 to 2016, the same defect occurs as for the previously recalled Mitsubishi ASX – The door lock mechanism in the door latch might not operate properly in high temperatures and the door could open while the vehicle is moving. The second recall is due to the overheating relay and besides the Outlanders it also concerns the Lancer and Lancer Sportback models.

Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac

Mercedes-Benz also announces two calls this week. The pistons on the rear axle brake calipers are inadequate at the GLE and GLS models with production dates from April to June 2018. Passenger detection defect are appearing with this year’s and last year’s E-Class, CLS and AMG GT models. If a child seat is installed on the passenger seat, the airbag might not be deactivated and be deployed in the event of an accident. The Cadillac CT6 recall is also associated with a child seat. Adhesive residue on the Isofix mounting brackets may prevent the child seat from being installed correctly.

Land Rover

Land Rover Range Rover and Discovery also may have a brake problem. For mentioned cars with a production date from November 13, 2017 to March 17, 2018, the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) feature may not activate, without a warning message informing the driver.

Opel Ampera

Unlike Toyota, which recently recalled its Hybrid and EV models due to a problem with the electrics – we wrote here – Opel is to recall its Ampera-e model (2016-2018) for a purely mechanical reason. A foreign object could fall into the upper steering column jacket and the steering could be blocked.
