Starter relay may cause fires in more than one million BMWs (week 41/25)

This week’s recalls:
– BMW, Toyota – starter relay
– Peugeot, Citroen a Opel – fuel leak
– Citroen, Jeep – Start-stop system

Overview of recalls in the 41 week of 2025

Four recalls for 9 models of four brands were announced via EU Safety Gate in the 41 week of 2025. Eleven recalls for 21 models of eight brands have been published by the German Motor Vehicle Authority (KBA).

This week, we find one recall in the European Safety Gate system for BMW, Dacia, Mini and Toyota.

Through the German KBA, recalls have been issued by BMW, Citroen, DS, Jeep, Opel, Peugeot, Polestar and Toyota.

Starter relay

BMW is recalling 1,145,385 vehicles of the 4 Series, 6 Series, X5, X4, X3, Z4, i3, 5 Series, 3 Series, 1 Series, X7, 2 Series and 7 Series model ranges, which were manufactured between 28 September 2015 and 7 September 2021.
The recall is due to the starter relay potentially not being adequately protected against water ingress. Its corrosion can also lead to a short circuit and, subsequently, a fire in 2,113 derivatives of the BMW Z4 under the name of the 2020 and 2021 Toyota Supra. The relevant recall codes are 0012550600, 0012560600, 0012570600, 0012620600, 25SD-086 and the recall is monitored by the KBA under reference numbers 15632R and 15633R.

The starter relay is also behind another recall by the Bavarian carmaker. This affects 162,852 BMW 3 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series, X5, X6 and X7 vehicles produced between 20 March 2018 and 11 February 2025. In this case, the issue is the inadequate mounting of the starter relay. If it becomes loose, a short circuit and subsequent fire may result. The internal recall code is 0012590600 and the KBA reference number is 15630R.

Fuel leak

Another major recall has been announced this week by the Stellantis group. Peugeot is recalling 73,954 cars from the 308, 408, 3008 and 5008 ranges, which were built between 9 February 2023 and 23 May 2024. Citroën is also recalling 13,867 C5X and C5 Aircross cars produced between 5 November 2023 and 24 June 2024, as well as 1,085 DS4 models. The recall will also affect 1,377 Opel Astra and Grandland vehicles produced in 2024. The reason for the recall is a leak at the connection between the fuel line and the high-pressure pump, which can lead to a fire.

Start-stop system

In this case, the owners of the affected cars will probably not rush to the workshop, and many will see the removal of the start-stop function as a relief. Citroën is recalling 6,838 C5 Aircross vehicles produced between September 2023 and May 2025 due to an issue with the body control module (BCM) that can prevent the engine from shutting down in start-stop mode. Similarly affected are owners of 22,796 Jeep Avenger vehicles produced between November 2024 and June 2025.
