Audi and Skoda: Emissions cheating software recall is back (week 49/24)

This week’s recalls:
– Audi, Škoda – emissions management
– Citroen – brake booster
– Suzuki, Toyota – brakes

Overview of the recalls in the 49th week of 2024

Three recalls for 10 models of two manufacturers were issued via EU Safety Gate in week 49 of 2024. Eight recalls for 15 models of seven manufacturers were announced via the German Motor Vehicle Authority (KBA).

Two recalls can be found in the European Safety Gate system for Citroen and one recall announced by Toyota.

Audi, Ford, Jeep, Land Rover, Opel, Škoda and Suzuki are recalling via the KBA.

Illegal manipulation of emissions

This week, Skoda is recalling 3,583 Fabia and Roomster vehicles manufactured between 2008 and 2015 to authorised workshops via the German Motor Vehicle Authority (KBA). This is a renewal of one of the many recalls with the original code “23R6”, which saw over 1.2 million Skoda Fabia, Roomster, Rapid, Octavia, Yeti and Superb model lines recalled in 2016 and 2017. The reason for the recall with the new code “23FG” is again an unauthorised defeat device in the emission control and measurement system.

The VW emissions scandal came to light back in 2015. Millions of Volkswagen Group diesel vehicles equipped with the EA189 and its successor EA288 engines contained illegal software. We have also recently reported on a mysterious voluntary technical measure by the Skoda, coded 23AX, which is also linked to this scandal.

Two recalls to remove illegal software were also announced by Audi this week. The number of potentially affected vehicles with four circles in their badges has already passed the three-quarters of a million mark.

Brake booster in Citroen and DS

This is also not the first time that Citroen has been recalled for insufficient vacuum pump lubrication in the European Safety Gate system. We reported on this in week 24 of 2023 and it now reappears under a different number. The vacuum pump can be damaged, leading to a reduction in braking performance and a risk of an accident.

Brakes also on Suzuki and Toyota

Due to the programming of the software of the electronic traction control unit on some Toyota Corolla vehicles manufactured from January 2023 to November 2024, the brake fluid pressure may be incorrectly regulated when the brake pedal is depressed on a corner. This may result in stiffening of the brake pedal with reduced braking force, thereby increasing stopping distance. Suzuki Swace Suzuki Swace vehicles from the same production period may also experience the same problem.

Details on this week’s Rapex recalls can be found in the table below.

We write about the KBA recalls in the following articles:

What should an owner do if there's a recall?

Please note that the recall may not apply to all vehicles produced in a given period. If you think your car might be affected, you should immediately contact an dealer or workshop officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details. You can use our sample request text. After reporting the vehicle's VIN code, you will find out if the defect is present on your car, or if it has already been resolved by the previous owner if the car was purchased second-hand.

If you wish to know more about the eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accident damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), in that case, we suggest going to this page.

Do you know the year Your car was made? You most likely don't.
