VW Tiguan 2.0 BiTDI does not switch off the fuel pump after an accident, increasing the risk of fire (week 31/19)

Three recalls for three models of three carmakers were announced in the 31st week of 2019. Jeep, Kia, and Volkswagen issued one recall each.

With the Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 BiTDI manufactured from August 2017 to June 2018, in the event of an accident involving airbag deployment, the fuel pump is not switched off as intended.

As a result, the fuel pump could continue conveying fuel, increasing the risk of fire. Tiguan is the most recalled model of all the VW production. Since 2016, we have registered 16 recalls through the EU Rapex system – see our archive.

Jeep

Jeep’s recall only applies to Wranglers with right-hand drive made between October 2017 and February 2019. A fixing nut on the steering shaft may become loose, which can impair the vehicle steerability.

Kia

Kia announces a smaller recall with its Picanto models manufactured in June 2012. The fuel filler and fuel levelling hoses may wear over time, potentially resulting in a fuel leak. Fuel leakage close to a source of ignition increases the risk of the vehicle catching fire.
