Faulty relay with Kia Niro, spontaneous downshift with Mazda MX-5 (week 21/19)

Three recalls for four models of three carmakers were announced in the 21st week of 2019. Kia, Mazda, and Mercedes-Benz had one recall each.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid Kia Niro models were recalled this week because of a possible main relay failure that can cause a short circuit and fire on vehicles from the model years 2016, 2017 (Niro DE HEV) and the model year 2018 (Niro DE PHEV). For the same reason, a related Hyundai Ioniq was recalled in January. The Kia Niro was already recalled in August 2018 for a possible oil leakage on the power electrode inside the hydraulic clutch actuator – we wrote here.

Mazda

Defective software may result in the automated transmission shifting down unintentionally with the Mazda MX-5 manufactured from October 2016 to November 2018. This may cause the rear wheels to lock, increasing the risk of an accident. The Mazda MX-5 was also recalled back in September 2018 due to a possible malfunction of the direct-current converter control unit – we wrote here. This could result in a short circuit and damage to the converter, which can lead to fire with cars produced from August 2014 to April 2018.

Mercedes-Benz

Already the fourth recall we have added to the list of defects with the AMG GT model. In addition to a faulty e-call system, it may have defects on the airbags and on the occupant classification system for the passenger seat. The latest problem relates to the rivet joint of the seat belt attachment cover, which may burst under very low temperatures. The same problem occurs with Mercedes CLS with a production date between July 2017 and March 2018.

What the owner should do?

If you read about a recall that you think may affect your car, you should make immediate contact with a dealer or workshop that’s been officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details.

If you wish to know more about eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accidents damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), then we suggest going to HPI-Check.
