Worldwide, 2,087 2019 model year VW Touaregs will need to be serviced due to a possible failure of the tailgate control mechanism.
The recall applies to vehicles with the optional equipment “4E7 Rear Door Closing Servo” or “5I6 Comfort Rear Door Opening (virtual pedal) plus Easy Close” that rolled off the production line in January 2019. A defective spindle actuator for the power tailgate can cause the preloaded spring to release from the housing and injure nearby persons.
The tailgate drive unit will be checked by an authorised workshop and replaced if necessary. The internal code of this recall is “55L6“, KBA lists it as “011221“. According to the German authority, 19 cases of damage have been reported so far, including 1 injury (injured hand).
The Touareg was previously recalled this July. The nuts on the eccentric bolt of the rear-axle spring-link control arm may break due to stress corrosion. The recall affected 3,741 Touaregs built between Sept. 16, 2020, and Nov. 23, 2020.
One year earlier (July 2020), a possible gear oil leak recall affected 6,664 Touaregs manufactured between September and November 2019.
