Some Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles may roll away when the selector lever is placed in a parking position (P) due to an interruption in the parking mechanism.
The two importers, Kia and Hyundai, have launched a recall of their EV6 and Ioniq 5 electric vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with a Shift-By-Wire system with a shift control unit (SCU), and a parking blade drive motor. It was found “that when the vehicle is switched off in the parked position (P), a voltage fluctuation can affect the command signal from the SCU to the parking blade drive. This can lead to a temporary interruption of the parking mechanism, possibly increasing the risk of the vehicle rolling away,” a spokeswoman for Kia Deutschland told asp-Online.de when asked.
At Kia, 58,500 EV6 vehicles are affected worldwide from the start of production on 17 July 2021 until 2 May 2022, of which 26,143 are in Europe, and 3,559 are in Germany. In the case of the Ioniq 5, approximately 13,800 cars produced from 10 September 2021 to 3 May 2022 are affected in Germany alone.
The internal recall codes are “221058” for Kia and “21D064” for Hyundai. As a remedial measure, the vehicles in question will receive an update to the SCU software. The Kia spokeswoman added that customers should allow up to one hour for the workshop visit.
