Unusual Recall for the 17 Years Old BMW X5 (Week 41/18)

Eight recalls for eight models of seven car manufacturers were announced during the 41st week of 2018. BMW, Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Dodge, and Opel issued one recall each, two models were recalled by Jeep. A third of all the actions affect older cars with the date of production before 2010.

The oldest on this week´s list is the BMW X5 (2001 and 2002), and their fault is also the most interesting. If their owners manage to simultaneously switch off the engine and apply the handbrake, it is likely that the front airbag will activate unintentionally. It may happen because of incorrectly programmed airbag software and it is ironic that this fault was discovered only after seventeen years.

Jeep

Another recall for 15 year old cars were announced through the Rapex system by Jeep. On the Liberty models produced from 2003 to 2007, the corrosion on the rear transverse control arms may cause them to break. Jeep also recalls the newer Compass models for which the rear seatback latch does not work properly and the backrest can be folded forward unexpectedly in the event of rapid deceleration. For Compass, it’s the third recall in the last two weeks – see the archive.

Opel

This year, five recalls were also announced for the Opel Grandland Xsee our archive. Two weeks ago they appeared in our overview due to poorly tightened shock absorbers, this week because of an incorrectly tightened crankcase seal plug.

Dodge

Ten-year-old cars are also being recalled by the Dodge. For RAM pickups from 2008 to 2012, the fuel tank can be released and dropped to the road. There is a risk of fuel leakage and fire.

Ford

In October 2018, Ford issued a new recall for the Mondeo because of a possible panoramic sun-roof drop-off. The blue oval has previously announced a similar recall for their Tourneo Connect and Transit Connect models. Because this is not an isolated case, we have devoted a separate article to the sun-roofs: Do you have a panoramic sun-roof? Then you may have a problem…

Peugeot and Citroën

The corroding axle of the parking brake caliper appeared in our overviews back in August for the first time. At that time Mitsubishi recalled the ASX, Outlander and Outlander PHEV. This week we learned that the handbrake could corrode and fail also with Peugeot´s 4008 and Citroën´s C4 Aircross.

What the owner should do?

If you read about a recall that you think may affect your car, you should make immediate contact with a dealer or workshop that’s been officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details.

If you wish to know more about eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accidents damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), then we suggest going to HPI-Check.
