BMW recalls over 720,000 cars due to fire risk in the USA

BMW recalls 720,796 vehicles of various model series in the USA (NHTSA: 24V-608 – see list below). It is not yet clear whether European customers are also affected. (Update 12. 9. 2024: Vehicles in the EU27+ countries are not affected by this recall.)

This safety recall concerns the electrical connector of the water pump. Fluid from the crankcase ventilation system can accumulate on the intake air hose. If this happens, this fluid can drip onto the connector. Over time, this can lead to fluid ingress into the connector and possibly to a short circuit. In the worst case, there is a risk of a vehicle fire.

In an authorised workshop, BMW checks the water pump and the plug connector and, if necessary, replaces these components. The manufacturer will also fit a guard to drain any fluid that may drip onto the pump from the intake air housing of the crankcase ventilation system.

Owners of affected cars will be notified and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorised BMW centre for repair free of charge. Owners who had this repair performed at their own expense before the recall notification may be eligible for reimbursement.

What the owner should do?

If you read about a recall that you think may affect your car, you should make immediate contact with a dealer or workshop that’s been officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details.

If you wish to know more about eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accidents damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), then we suggest going to HPI-Check.
