BMW iX1: Possible loss of drive

BMW-iX1-2023-loss-drive

BMW is taking 5,855 electric vehicles to its authorised workshops worldwide. In Germany, a total of 1,511 iX1s are affected by this “technical action”, of which 1,408 vehicles are already in the hands of customers, said a company spokeswoman when asked.

“Furthermore, development and pre-production vehicles of another BEV model are affected, which has not yet had a market launch,” she explained further. Since these vehicles were registered as test vehicles, they would also have to be reported to the authorities.

Driver receives error message

“Internal quality checks and customer complaints have revealed that in some circumstances, an output shaft can become detached from the electric drive unit on the affected vehicles due to a manufacturing error in the supplier’s process. In sporadic cases, this can lead to a loss of drive and subsequently to the vehicle rolling out,” the spokesperson explained to the kfz-betrieb website the error pattern and possible effect.

In the event of a fault, the failure is indicated to the driver by a red check-control message (“drive malfunctioning”). The front left and/or right output shaft change is announced. According to our information, the production period of the iX1 is November 2022 to July 2023.

The measure runs internally under the action codes “0031100200” and “0031110200” and is not yet listed in the recall database of the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). According to the spokesperson, the fault has been reported, but the authority is not monitoring the remedial action.

What the owner should do?

If you read about a recall that you think may affect your car, you should make immediate contact with a dealer or workshop that’s been officially authorised to perform repairs on behalf of the manufacturer and ask for the details.

If you wish to know more about eventual problems of a specific car (e.g. real mileage, potential traffic accidents damages, odometer rollback, repairs, etc.), then we suggest going to HPI-Check.
