Mercedes-Benz: 28 recalls involving 20 models in 2017

Mercedes-Benz announced 28 recalls in 2017 affecting 20 models according to the Rapex database. The Class E models were most often recalled while the oldest recalled car was a 2008 Sprinter.

As early as January 2017, owners of the 2012-2015 C, E, S, SL class models were informed of a recall. It was one of Mercedes’s largest recalls in 2017 and was issued due to faulty contacts with the power steering control unit. The contacts could be poorly connected and cause a risk of power steering failure.

The second major recall was announced by Mercedes in August. Missing welding points on the rear crossmember were revealed in the V-class and related Vito vans produced between 2014-2017. Class A, B, C, E, CLA, GLC models from the same years were also recalled in October. These could suffer from overloading the starter current limiter which may cause overheating and fire.

However, Mercedes’s biggest recall came in December. It affected A, B, C, E, V, CLA, GLA, GLC, GLK models produced between 2011-2017. The models suffer from an insufficiently grounded steering column which could lead to an electrostatic discharge and the spontaneous deployment of the driver’s side airbag.
