recalls 2017

A total of 260 recalls were announced in 2017, according to the EU rapid alert system Rapex. Mercedes-Benz issued the most recalls, closely followed by two Groupe PSA brands – Peugeot and Citroën. Automakers with more than 10 recalls in 2017 included Renault, Toyota and BMW. In 2017, a total of 244 models from 40 brands were called. Recalls concerned frequently also models made prior to 2007 – more than 10 years old.

5 to 10 recalls were issued by 15 car automakers while 17 brands issued less than 5 – see the table below. Mini, Suzuki, Alpina, Bentley and Rolls-Royce had one recall each.

The most recalls were announced over issues with airbags and their parts (181). The second most common cause for recall were defects related to the engine (54). 50 models were recalled over a risk of fire, while 39 had issues with suspension and 35 with brakes. 31 models were found to have steering defects in 2017. It should be noted, that Rapex includes only dangerous vehicles with a potential risk to crew or road safety.
